Interesting burn outcome

Anyone seen this? Just finished a project and flipped it over for the Logo. This side had stain on it. Instead of a burn it Etched into the wood with nice crisp edges.

This was a drawer facing for a gun cabinet. He wanted the 2 weapons on the front.

normally I get clean edges from an etch by doing cut&fill are you saying that was just fill? Looks very clean so maybe the rates were slow enough to get good on/off times for the laser and positions.

Doug it was fill only and .085 interval. Overscan was .5 if I remember right.

Why do you think it did not leave a burn mark in the wood? That’s what got me wondering but I’m still learning.

so you wanted more of a surface-only type of etching? Depth is a function of power and material and maybe in this case also surface treatment. You are using a VISIBLE light laser so when the material is dark it will absorb much more energy than when the material is white or light. CO2 lasers have similar effect but it’s more about what is effected by IR light. Clear acrylic can be cut because it is NOT clear to IR light.

I’m pretty sure it was this color difference which give you a different effect.

I see. That would make sense due to my power level was higher than normal. Thought I would have a issue with the stain. Going to try a burn tomorrow where I copied the stain and wood on some scrap. Going to see if I can repeat what I had. If so I’m going to try a inlay with black epoxy in the design. Be fun if it works. Thx for the info
