Removing smoke smell from projects

The smell of burning smoke was brought up today in the Digital Tools SiG meeting and had me thinking about ways to remove this. I’ve heard ozone has been used in smoke smell removal commercially and it had me wondering if there aren’t little ozone smell elimators out there.

There are and I ordered one which is battery powered and USB rechargeable. The plan is to have a small box I’ll put the lased project parts in along with the ozone generator and let it run for 30 minutes or so.

Interesting idea, please let us know if it works.

I finally received the little Ozone generator a couple of weeks ago and I could not get it to work or do anything to the smoke smell. Could not even smell ozone in the jar so I went to return it and was refused.
So ofcourse I had to take it apart and the reason it wasn’t working was it uses the human body as a ground via the necklace chain. If I hold onto the necklace attaching point I smell tiny whiffs of ozone emmitting from the paint brush ends.

I’m not sticking my head or hands into a jar for 12 hours so I ordered another model. This model uses small generator plates which are of the same design as commercial ozone generators so hopefully I’ll have better luck. At least better luck testing. I will be back in another 4-6 weeks.

It does work but the 2nd ozone generator I purchasaed( 10g/h ) is way too powerful for the task since I believe it’s best to run for ~3-4 hours as opposed to 10 minutes. That is unless you have a very large piece to de-smokify and the container is also very large.

I would recommend something in the range of 500mg/h for a 12"x12"x12" box( 1 cu ft ).
Include a small fan in the box, run for 3-4 hours and then just the fan for 1 hour afterwards to give the ozone time to further convert or dissipate. YOU DO NOW WANT TO BREATH IN ANY OZONE.
