Rotary for a CNC

Personally, I’ve long struggled with why I’d want a rotary 4th axis on my CNC.
Others like Lou and Ian have them but it was Howard who had the answer.
He had an ornamental mill with lots of end mills and he loved the art form.

Check out what he just created with his new rotary attachment:

Cool! I have a length of square wood( 2x2 ) which a friend carved a loose ball into one end and while I verified my 4th axis of the 3040 is now functional, replicating that using the 4th axis is my goal when I can get the 3040CNC setup on LinuxCNC/Remora.

Other projects I’ve seen using the 4th rotary have been mostly using it like an indexed chuck and less of an orchestrated 4 axis control system.
